Proposal titleDomusBITae. Building a virtual research community in information studies (DomusBITae. Creación de una comunidad virtual de estudios informacionales)

Proponent: Francisco Salto (Universidad de León)

  • José María Díaz: Coordination, Networking (Universidad de León)
  • Félix Barrio: Software quality, security and accessibility concerns (INTECO)
  • Leticia Barrionuevo: Repository (Universidad de León)
  • Mario Pérez-Montoro: Knowledge Management (Universitat de Barcelona)

Abstract: domusBITae develops both conceptual and technical tools for an interdisciplinar understanding of the concept of information. The point is to achieve a mutual comprehension of distinct paradigms on information. Theoretical and also societal and ethical concerns are treated. The action will create an european community on informational studies, being transdisciplinar and enriched with its own collaborative toolkit (glossary, repository, working groups, directory, etc.). The proposal is based on an already active group of european researchers leaded by a spanish group. It unites the Universities of León and Barcelona and the INTECO (National Institute for Telecommunication Technologies), together with the wide community of BITrum researchers on information. The project shows two dimensions: one conceptual or theoretical and the other is technical, focused in the development of cooperative tools at an european level.

In 2008, BITrum is founded ( collaborating with main international agents, which fundational act is attached. The project is active and is developing a number of scientific activities, like a Glossary of terms, concepts, theories and metaphors on information, editing initiatives, collaborative tools, etc. The identity of the Spanish group is:
(a) In Universidad de León: José María Dïaz Nafría [telecommunications engineering], Francisco Salto [Logic], Leticia Barrionuevo [Information Science] are BITrum coordinators and have developed a schema of domusBITae in, as an umbrella for international institutions like FIS and SoII. It is comlemented with research projects of the Logic group at the Universidad de León in the Plan Nacional: projects FFI2008-0859, and recently BBF2001-2066, and HUM2005-05707. The group is head of projects 004A09 and recently 011A05 by the Junta de Castilla y León.
(b) At the Universidad de Barcelona, Mario Pérez Montoro [Information Science] will coordinate technical and conceptual tools related to information management. He is also researcher in projects by the National and Catalan Research agencies.
(c) INTECO shall collaborate for the technical implementation of the tools, under the guidance of Félix Barrio Juárez.

The spanish group leads the european project, which includes the following groups and researchers:
Rafael Capurro (Stuttgart, Berlin), Informational Ethics
Luciano Floridi (Oxford, Hertfordshire), Semantic Information
Wolfgang Hofkirchner (Vienna), Systemstheory
Elisabeth Buchanan (Madison, Wisconsin), Information Science
Pedro Marijuán (Zaragoza), bioinformation
Peter Fleissner (Vienna), Unified Information Theory
Michel Petitjean (París), Chemistry, information as structure
Birger Hjorland (Copenhagen) semiotics
Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic (Sweden) Physical Information
Mark Burguin (Ucrania) Mathematics, Information Theory
Dino Buzzetti (Bologna), bioinformation and Philosophy

The research consortium set up by the project has been designed to satisfy requirements of the 7th Frame Programme within the Infrastructure subprogramme (theme: Virtual Research Communities). However, our proposal is open to any other viable program.
